Cut the Cord: Run XOGO on a Smart TV
Introduction
We're often asked for advice on buying hardware. Customers want to know what type of display to buy, and what kind of media player to plug into it. The answer, of course, depends upon a number of factors including the size of your space, its location indoors or out, and whether you have any specific technical requirements. The great thing for XOGO customers is that our player app runs on many different platforms. Increasingly, though, we find ourselves recommending smart TVs to our customers.
A smart TV is one that can connect to the Internet, generally in order to stream content from apps like Netflix or HBO. They have an internal computer called an SOC (system-on-a-chip), and typically connect to an app store where applications like XOGO Player can be downloaded for free. Smart TVs are fantastic for digital signage, for a number of reasons:
Save Money on Hardware
If you run XOGO directly on a smart TV, there's no need to purchase external media player hardware. That can save you hundreds of dollars on media player hardware and cables.
Reduce Complexity
Just mount your smart TV on the wall, connect it to WiFi and download the XOGO Player app. There's no need to run power to a media player, plug in a keyboard, or hide the player and its HDMI cable behind your TV. By eliminating the media player and its cables, there's less that can go wrong in the field.
Widely Available
XOGO Player runs on a number of smart TV platforms, which are widely available from distributors as well as consumer stores like Best Buy. You can install XOGO on Amazon Fire TVs, on displays that run Android TV (like these models from Sony), or on commercial displays from LG that run WebOS. XOGO is also available on any commercial display from Sharp / NEC that has the RPi media player module.
We recommend choosing your smart TV based upon the size of your space, your budget, and any specific requirements around brightness or resolution (we always recommend 4K). Picture quality and longevity are generally better on higher-end models, but even basic models from Amazon are more than sufficient for entry-level digital signage.
