Memory Care Providers Have a New Tool: Digital Signage

Digital signage enables personalized messages and reminders for memory care patients.

Digital signage enables personalized messages and reminders.

Those with loved ones who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease may be familiar with different care options such as assisted living and in-home care. A specialized form of assistance targeted towards these memory-loss patients is called memory care.

What is memory care?

Memory care is form of long-term care that provides intensive, individual care to patients with memory loss. Just like assisted living, memory care employees provide meals and help with personal care tasks. However, they are also specially trained to deal with the symptoms that result from dementia or Alzheimer’s. In addition to the tasks that regular assisted-living provides, such as nutrition medication management and daily living, memory care provides a far more extensive list of services. For example, dementia patients are prone to wandering. To prevent wandering and ensure their patients’ safety, tracking bracelets, alarmed doors and full-time supervision may be set in place.

Where can you receive memory care?

Many assisted living facilities incorporate memory care “neighborhoods” for their dementia patients. These neighborhoods create stability, routine, and comfort to the patient. There are also stand-alone memory care facilities that are solely dedicated to this form of assistance.

It is important to note that there are also in-home dementia care options. While not as extensive an environment as a facility, in-home assistance by caretakers who specialize in dementia care can also be a viable option depending on your loved one’s circumstances.

What are the benefits?

It’s extremely important that your loved ones receive dedicated and tailored support for their specific condition and memory care can give that to them. Memory care can help keep your loved one safe and taken care of both physically and mentally.

How can digital signage be an aid to memory care providers?

Utilizing digital signage in a memory care environment can be an extremely valuable asset to a memory-loss patient. In-room signage can be used for personalized photos and messages. Daily self-care reminders, photos of family and friends, and more can be displayed in their room. Even in-home dementia caretakers can install this form of digital signage due to the low cost and easy set-up.

Along with individual rooms, digital signage can also be used in common areas. For facilities that integrate the use of tracking technology, a sensor trigger can be explored as an option for common area signage. By using sensors along with digital signage, a patient’s wristband approaching the screen can trigger a personal greeting and helpful reminders.

Summary

Digital signage can be an excellent addition to memory care treatment. Incorporating digital signage into a specialized adult care facility or in-home setup can be helpful to a dementia patient, providing personalization, memory aids and a connection back to faculty and family the patient will appreciate.
